From the editor

Welcome to the 8th edition of The Focal Point! Who would have thought that it would become such a success? Well, the editorial and writing team did, as did the marketing team, and the product development team, and the Green committee. Actually, everyone at Philips Lumec thought this would be a success, but thinking something and actually seeing it with your own eyes are two different things. A great many thanks go out to all our readers.

In this edition we take a closer look at Solar Power. We have two articles for you that breach on the subject matter. One is about Philips Lumec Solar Solution, a technology that allows you to run luminaires off-grid using clean solar energy alone (and yes, you can retrofit this solution). The other is about the Smart Grid project, a vision of a power grid entirely supported by sustainable energy sources like solar, geothermal, wind, etc, and how outdoor lighting can contribute to the cause.

We also cover The Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium, a project headed by Seattle City Light, and initiated by the DOE that aims to speed up the adoption of LED technology for street lighting.

How much energy can a dimmer on an outdoor lighting fixture save? If we said 40%, would you be surprised? A must read.

What has a warmer colour temperature? The Sun or the Moon? We tackle the misunderstood concept of Warm vs Cold light in LED outdoor lighting applications.

Lastly, we take a look at design and style in outdoor lighting. After all, variety is the spice of life!

As always, if you have any questions, or if you would like us to write about a specific subject matter, let us know.

Enjoy!
