Leonis: Montreal Goes Green With LED park lighting

Leonis installation in Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles

Leonis luminaires, equipped with Lumec's LifeLEDT, now line the Émilie-Gamelin park in Montreal's famous Quartier des Spectacles.

Emerging from a proposal advanced by ADISQ (Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) at the Montreal Summit, the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership was created in June 2003. A non-profit organization, the Partnership sets out a vision of development based on the enhancement of cultural activities in the life of its downtown neighbourhood. To promote this vision, the Partnership develops and implements projects to bring the neighborhood together as a place to live and a place to create, and aims to position the area as one of Montreal's major centres of activity and an international cultural destination. This area is home to 30 performance halls totaling almost 28,000 seats, numerous international festivals, art galleries and centres for the exhibition and broadcast of alternative culture.

In the centre of Quartier des Spectacles lies the Émile-Gamelin Park. The City of Montreal in conjunction with the Ville-Marie borough wanted to breathe new life into this renowned cultural destination while maintaining the avant-garde feeling of the Quartier des Spectacles. Considering the large amount of people that come to this area, the ageing park needed a facelift. The park was too dark, the illumination was not consistent, and increasing safety, were the issues on the table. Since the City and the borough wanted an environmentally sound lighting solution to address these issues, the LED Leonis by Lumec was the logical choice.

The entire project is far from being completed, landscape architects are still hard at work revitalizing the park. However, the lighting portion of the mandate has been successfully implemented. A few dozen Leonis luminaires powered by LifeLEDT now line the edges of the park, considerably increasing illumination and safety, saving the City and the borough a considerable amount of money on yearly electricity costs while protecting the environment so that future generations can enjoy the splendor of Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles for years to come.
