The Art and Science of Design

Design. The word conjures up many images, from fashion to engineering. But what does it really mean?

  • To conceive or fashion in the mind; invent.
  • To formulate a plan for; devise.
  • To create for a particular purpose or effect.
  • To have as a goal or purpose; intend.
  • To create or execute in an artistic or highly skilled manner.

At Philips Lumec, we design for the future by incorporating every stage of product manufacture into our environmentally responsible philosophy. The consequences of our products on the future are always kept in mind. We don’t simply make a product; we design it visually and technologically to become a harmonious part of the environment we all occupy. With such a mandate, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously.

Lighting technology has the potential to make a considerable contribution to the reduction of green-house gas emissions all over the world. To quote an article in the New York Times:

“Studies suggest that a complete conversion to the (LED) lights could decrease carbon dioxide emissions from electric power use for lighting by up to 50 percent in just over 20 years; in the United States, lighting accounts for about 6 percent of all energy use. A recent report by McKinsey & Company cited conversion to LED lighting as potentially the most cost effective of a number of simple approaches to tackling global warming using existing technology.”

Design is about more than simple appearance, it is what differentiates the commonplace from the truly remarkable, not only visually, but technically, and functionally. To learn more about the benefits and contributions related to the design of our products, click here.
